About

Washoe Lake State Park is a fantastic outdoor playground just outside Reno where families can enjoy a wide range of activities across 3,775 acres of stunning Nevada landscape. With a shallow, sandy-bottomed lake perfect for wading, miles of easy hiking trails, and abundant wildlife including wild horses and migratory birds, this park offers something for every age and energy level.

Highlights

  • Swimming and wading in the shallow, kid-friendly lake waters
  • Spotting wild horses roaming the park's open spaces
  • Easy nature trails perfect for family hiking and biking
  • Watching migratory birds and local wildlife at the wetlands
  • Large grassy areas and shaded picnic spots for family gatherings

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive early on summer weekends to snag shaded picnic areas near the lake, they fill up fast during peak season
  2. 2.Bring water shoes as the lake bottom can be muddy and rocky in spots, making barefoot walking uncomfortable for little ones
  3. 3.Pack binoculars for wildlife viewing; the park is home to wild horses that kids absolutely love spotting from a safe distance
  4. 4.The north side of the lake tends to be less crowded than the main beach area and offers equally good swimming access
  5. 5.Download the Nevada State Parks app beforehand to access trail maps offline, as cell service can be spotty in parts of the park

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most comfortable temperatures for hiking and exploring, with fewer crowds than summer. Visit on weekday mornings for the quietest experience and best wildlife viewing opportunities, as animals are most active early in the day.

What to Know

Day-use fees are $7 per vehicle (Nevada residents) or $10 (non-residents). There are restrooms and picnic facilities but no food vendors, so pack snacks and lunch. Some trails and areas are stroller-accessible, though much of the terrain is better suited for older kids who can walk independently.

Seasonal Notes

Summer (June-August) offers the best swimming weather but can be extremely hot, so plan water activities for mornings. Winter brings occasional snow and cold temperatures, limiting some activities but offering beautiful desert scenery. Spring wildflower blooms are spectacular in wet years. Note that the lake can be very low or even dry during drought years, significantly impacting swimming opportunities.

Nearby Eats

Head to nearby Carson City (15 minutes south) for family favorites like Red's Old 395 Grill with their extensive kids' menu, or stop at Mom and Pop's Diner for classic American comfort food that appeals to picky eaters.
