Keystone Ancient Forest

4.8(578 reviews)$Nature
🕑 1.5-2 hours👶 Best for ages 4 and up. The easy, mostly flat trails (under 2 miles) are manageable for preschoolers who can walk independently, while elementary-aged kids will love the adventure of exploring ancient trees and spotting wildlife. Stroller-friendly for most of the main trail, though baby carriers work better on narrower sections.

About

Keystone Ancient Forest offers families a magical journey through one of Oklahoma's last remaining old-growth forests, featuring towering 500-year-old post oaks and easy, well-maintained trails perfect for little legs. Kids will feel like they've stepped into a fairy tale as they explore the unique Cross Timbers ecosystem with interpretive signs that make learning about nature fun and engaging.

Highlights

  • Ancient post oak and blackjack oak trees that are 300-500 years old - perfect for teaching kids about history
  • Easy loop trails with boardwalks over seasonal creeks
  • Wildlife spotting including deer, armadillos, and dozens of bird species
  • Educational interpretive signs along the trail that explain the ecosystem
  • Unique boulder formations and moss-covered rocks that kids love to discover

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive early (right at 7:00 AM opening) on Saturday or Sunday for cooler temperatures and the best wildlife spotting opportunities before crowds arrive
  2. 2.Download the trail map from their website beforehand as cell service can be spotty in the forest
  3. 3.Bring a nature scavenger hunt list - kids love searching for acorns, animal tracks, moss-covered rocks, and different leaf shapes
  4. 4.Pack insect repellent and check kids for ticks after your hike, especially in warmer months
  5. 5.The parking lot is small (about 15 spaces), so weekday visits mean you'll likely have the trails mostly to yourselves

Best Time to Visit

Fall (October-November) offers the best experience with cooler temperatures, beautiful autumn colors, and fewer bugs. Visit on Saturdays between 8-10 AM to beat the heat and enjoy the forest when wildlife is most active. Spring is lovely but can be muddy after rain.

What to Know

Admission is FREE with a small parking area on-site. No restrooms or water fountains available, so come prepared with plenty of water and bathroom breaks beforehand. The trails are natural surface (dirt and rock) with some uneven terrain.

Seasonal Notes

Best visited in fall and spring. Summer visits should be early morning only due to Oklahoma heat and humidity. Trails may be muddy or closed after heavy rain. Note the limited hours: closed Monday-Wednesday, only open until 2:00 PM on Thursdays. Winter visits are pleasant but trees are bare.
