Rouge River Park

Rouge River Park offers families over 1,700 acres of protected natural landscape perfect for introducing kids to outdoor exploration. With easy hiking trails winding through forests and alongside the river, plus open meadows ideal for picnics and wildlife spotting, this park provides an accessible wilderness experience just minutes from urban Markham.

1. 1.Download an offline trail map before arriving as cell service can be spotty in deeper areas of the park.
2. 2.Bring bug spray during summer months (especially June and July) as mosquitoes can be active near the river and wooded areas.
3. 3.The Bob Hunter Memorial Park section on the west side has the most accessible trails and best parking for families with young children.
4. 4.Pack binoculars for kids to spot wildlife including deer, beavers, and over 200 bird species throughout the year.
5. 5.Wear layers as temperatures can be significantly cooler in the shaded forest trails, even on warm days.

Visit on weekday mornings for the quietest experience, or late spring (May to June) and early fall (September to October) when temperatures are mild, bugs are minimal, and foliage is spectacular. Weekends can get busy on trails closest to parking areas.

Parking is free at multiple access points along the park. There are no food vendors or facilities inside most areas of the park, so pack snacks, water, and use washrooms before arriving. Trails range from easy to moderate difficulty.

The park is open year-round with different activities each season. Fall offers stunning foliage (late September to October), winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, spring features wildflowers, and summer is ideal for hiking. Trails can be muddy during spring thaw (March to April).

Main Street Markham (about 10 minutes away) has numerous family-friendly restaurants including Symposium Cafe for casual dining with kids' menus, or pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the park's designated areas.
