Early morning (7-9am) on weekdays offers the best wildlife viewing as birds are most active and trails are less crowded. Spring (April-May) brings peak bird migration and wildflowers, while fall offers beautiful foliage and cooler temperatures for comfortable hiking.

Entry is completely free with no permits required. Parking is available at multiple trailheads including Sellwood Park. There are no restrooms or food facilities within the refuge, so plan accordingly and pack snacks and water.

Spring migration (April-May) brings the most bird species diversity. Trails can be muddy and occasionally flooded in winter months (December-February), so check conditions before visiting. Summer can be buggy near water features. Fall offers comfortable temperatures and beautiful autumn colors through the wooded sections.
