Mino Mountain Trail Network

Adventure
🕑 2 to 4 hours depending on trail choice and pace👶 Best for ages 5 and up. Younger children can handle the easier trails near the base, while older kids and teens will enjoy the challenge of longer routes. Toddlers are possible in carriers but strollers are not recommended on most trails.

About

Mino Mountain Trail Network offers families a peaceful escape into nature just outside Osaka, with well-maintained forest paths that wind through beautiful scenery including bamboo groves and seasonal maple trees. The variety of trail difficulties means families can choose routes matching their children's abilities, from gentle walks suitable for young kids to more challenging hikes for adventurous families.

Highlights

  • Mino Waterfall, a beautiful 33-meter cascade that serves as the main destination for the popular family trail
  • Stunning fall foliage in autumn when maple trees turn vibrant red and gold
  • Peaceful bamboo groves and forest paths with fresh mountain air
  • Wildlife spotting opportunities including birds, butterflies, and occasionally deer
  • Traditional tea houses and small shops along the main trail selling local treats

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Start early in the morning (by 8-9am) to avoid crowds and heat, especially on weekends when local families visit.
  2. 2.Download offline maps before visiting as cell service can be spotty on trails. Trail signs are primarily in Japanese, so having navigation help is essential.
  3. 3.Bring plenty of snacks and water as there are limited facilities once you're on the trails. Vending machines are available near the trailhead.
  4. 4.Wear proper hiking shoes with good grip, as trails can be slippery after rain. The forest paths often have roots and rocks.
  5. 5.Visit the famous Mino Waterfall (Mino-no-taki) at the end of the main trail, it's about 2.7km from the station and makes a great turnaround point for families.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (November) is spectacular for fall foliage, while spring offers pleasant temperatures. Visit on weekdays to avoid crowds, and start morning hikes by 9am before temperatures rise. Avoid rainy days as trails become slippery.

What to Know

The trails are free to access. Parking is available near Mino Station but can fill quickly on weekends. Restrooms and vending machines are located near the trailhead, but facilities are limited once you start hiking, so plan accordingly.

Seasonal Notes

Peak autumn foliage season (mid-November) brings large crowds. Summer can be hot and humid. Trails remain open year-round but winter hiking requires extra caution on icy paths. Spring brings fresh greenery and comfortable temperatures.

Nearby Eats

Near Mino Station, you'll find family-friendly restaurants serving udon noodles and tempura. The trail area is famous for momiji tempura (deep-fried maple leaves), a unique local treat kids often enjoy trying along the walking path to the waterfall.
