Cliff Walk

FreeAdventure
πŸ•‘ 1-2 hours for families with young children doing a partial walk; 2-3 hours for the full trail with older kidsπŸ‘Ά Best for ages 5 and up who can handle moderate walking. The southern portion works for ages 3+ with sturdy strollers on paved sections, while the more rugged middle and northern sections are ideal for ages 8+ who enjoy scrambling over rocks and exploring. Teens particularly appreciate the dramatic photo opportunities and the sense of adventure.

About

The Cliff Walk offers families an unforgettable 3.5-mile journey along Newport's dramatic coastline, combining breathtaking ocean views with glimpses of historic Gilded Age mansions. This iconic path features both easy paved sections perfect for strollers and more rugged terrain for adventurous older kids, making it adaptable to your family's comfort level. The stunning natural beauty and fresh sea air provide an enriching outdoor experience that keeps kids engaged while parents soak in the spectacular scenery.

Highlights

  • βœ“Spectacular crashing waves and ocean views from dramatic cliff-top vantage points
  • βœ“Exploring the Forty Steps, a historic stone stairway descending toward the water
  • βœ“Spotting magnificent Gilded Age mansions like The Breakers from the path
  • βœ“Tide pool discoveries and watching seabirds along the rocky coastline
  • βœ“Natural tunnel and cave-like rock formations in the middle section that kids love to navigate

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Start at the southern entrance near Easton's Beach (Memorial Boulevard) for the easiest, most stroller-friendly section with the smoothest pavement
  2. 2.Bring water and snacks as there are no vendors along the trail, and pack layers since coastal winds can be strong even on warm days
  3. 3.Visit at low tide when possible to explore tide pools and see more of the rocky coastline below
  4. 4.Wear sturdy shoes (not flip-flops) as sections can be uneven, wet, and slippery, especially after rain
  5. 5.Don't attempt the full 3.5 miles with young kids, turn back at Forty Steps for a manageable 1.5-mile roundtrip with beautiful views

Best Time to Visit

Visit early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon on weekdays to avoid crowds, especially during summer months. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer ideal weather with fewer tourists, comfortable temperatures for walking, and stunning seasonal colors. Sunset walks are magical but plan to finish before dark as the path has no lighting.

What to Know

The Cliff Walk is completely free and open year-round from dawn to dusk. Parking can be challenging in summer; use the lot at Easton's Beach (paid) or street parking near Memorial Boulevard. The trail has no restrooms along the route, so use facilities at Easton's Beach before starting. Limited accessibility, only the first southern section is stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Seasonal Notes

Open year-round, but spring and fall offer the most comfortable walking conditions. Winter walks can be stunning but icy and dangerous, avoid after storms. Summer (June-August) is busiest and can be hot with little shade. The path may close temporarily during severe weather or after storms for safety inspections. Fall foliage adds beautiful color to the mansion views in October.

Nearby Eats

Stop at The Landing Restaurant & Bar on Bowen's Wharf for kid-friendly waterfront dining with burgers and fish & chips, or grab casual bites and ice cream at Easton's Beach Snack Bar right at the southern trailhead (seasonal, summer only).
