Artipelag Summer Festival

Summer program with family activities, June through August

Season: June – August

Artipelag

About

The Artipelag Summer Festival transforms a stunning contemporary art museum on the Stockholm archipelago into a vibrant family destination each summer. Set amid beautiful forest and waterfront scenery, this program combines art exhibitions, creative workshops, outdoor activities, and cultural performances specifically designed to engage children and families. It's a unique opportunity to blend nature, art, and Swedish summer culture in one unforgettable experience.

What to Expect

Families will discover a mix of interactive art installations, hands-on creative workshops for children, outdoor sculpture trails through the surrounding forest, and family-friendly performances. The modern architecture of Artipelag itself is stunning, with large windows overlooking the water and forest. Expect a relaxed, cultural atmosphere where kids can explore art in an accessible way while parents enjoy world-class exhibitions. The outdoor spaces provide plenty of room for children to run and play between activities, and the waterfront setting offers beautiful views and fresh archipelago air.

Highlights for Kids

  • Hands-on art workshops led by professional artists where kids create their own masterpieces to take home
  • Sculpture trails winding through the beautiful forest with interactive outdoor installations
  • Waterfront location with stunning archipelago views and opportunities for nature exploration
  • Special family performances including music, theater, and storytelling events
  • The unique modern architecture of the building itself, which fascinates both kids and adults

Pro Tips for Families

  1. Book workshop activities in advance online as family programs often fill up quickly, especially during peak summer weeks in July
  2. Bring swimwear and towels—there are swimming spots nearby where kids can cool off after art activities
  3. Pack insect repellent for exploring the forest trails, and layers for unpredictable archipelago weather even in summer
  4. The museum shop has excellent Swedish design items and art supplies that make unique souvenirs—arrive early before popular items sell out

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings (Tuesday-Thursday) for smaller crowds and more personalized attention during workshops. Weekends feature special family programs and performances but are busier. Arrive when the museum opens at 10 or 11 AM to enjoy workshops first, then explore outdoor areas during the warmest afternoon hours. August tends to be less crowded than July when Swedish families are on vacation.

Food & Drinks

The on-site restaurant offers a children's menu with Swedish and international options, plus outdoor seating with water views—expect to pay 100-150 SEK per child's meal. There's also a cafĂ© serving lighter fare, pastries, and excellent coffee. For budget-conscious families, picnicking is welcome in designated outdoor areas, and there's a small grocery store in nearby Gustavsberg (5 minutes away) where you can stock up. High chairs and children's cutlery are available at the restaurant.

Parking & Access

Artipelag is located about 25 km east of central Stockholm on VÀrmdö island. Driving takes 25-30 minutes from the city center, and free parking is available on-site. Public transport option: take bus 474 from Slussen station (about 50 minutes). The venue is stroller-friendly with elevators and smooth pathways throughout, though some forest trails may be challenging for strollers. Rental strollers are not available, so bring your own if needed. English is widely spoken by all staff.
