Austin Zoo

4.2(4,993 reviews)$$Zoo
🕑 1.5-2.5 hours👶 The smaller scale and walking paths work well for preschoolers who might be overwhelmed by larger zoos, while the rescue mission and animal stories engage older kids interested in conservation.

About

Austin Zoo is a rescue zoo that provides a forever home to over 300 animals who cannot be released into the wild, giving kids a chance to see big cats, bears, primates, and Texas native wildlife while learning about animal welfare. The intimate 15-acre setting allows for up-close encounters and personal connections with the animals that larger zoos can't match.

Highlights

  • The big cats including lions, tigers, and cougars in naturalistic habitats
  • Petting barnyard area where kids can interact with goats and other farm animals
  • The miniature train ride that loops through the property

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Bring cash for the train ride and feeding quarters for animal feed dispensers - some machines are cash-only
  2. 2.The zoo is mostly shaded but still hot in summer - go early or late, especially weekdays when they're open until 3 PM
  3. 3.Staff feeding times (check schedule at entrance) are the best opportunity to see animals active and learn their individual rescue stories

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings in fall or spring when temperatures are mild. Animals are most active before the heat of the day. Weekends get crowded with locals.

What to Know

Small snack bar with basic items like hot dogs, nachos, and ice cream. Picnic tables available and outside food is allowed in picnic area. Free gravel parking lot. Can get dusty but plenty of spaces. About a 2-minute walk to entrance. Basic restroom facilities near entrance. Changing tables available but facilities are modest. Paths are mostly paved but some gravel areas. Regular strollers work fine but all-terrain wheels are easier. Some hills throughout the property. Most paths are accessible but some areas have gravel or slight inclines. The intimate size makes it manageable for most mobility needs.

Seasonal Notes

Extended weekend hours in spring and summer until 6 PM. Very hot June-August so morning visits essential. Special Halloween event in October. Note shorter hours (close at 3 PM) Monday-Friday year-round.

Nearby Eats

The zoo is in a rural area of southwest Austin. Plan to drive about 10-15 minutes back toward town for restaurants. Hill Country Galleria shopping area has multiple family dining options including Chick-fil-A and local spots.
