While the final half-mile requires a permit and is not suitable for young children, families can hike the spectacular 2-mile trail to Scout Lookout together, enjoying breathtaking canyon views without the extreme exposure.
Visit in spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) for moderate temperatures and stunning scenery. Start early morning (6-7 AM) to beat heat and crowds, avoid summer midday heat which can be dangerous. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
A timed permit is required year-round for the final half-mile chain section (apply via lottery on recreation.gov). The Zion park entrance fee is $35 per vehicle (valid 7 days), and free shuttle buses run from the visitor center to trailheads during peak season (March-November).
Open year-round but winter (December-February) can involve snow and ice requiring microspikes or crampons. Spring and fall offer ideal temperatures. Summer (June-August) brings extreme heat,start very early and consider skipping on days over 95°F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common July-September.
