Angels Landing Trail

4.8(473 reviews)FreeAdventure
🕑 5-6 hours round trip to Scout Lookout for families; add 2-3 hours if completing the full chain section👶 Best for ages 12 and up for the full trail due to steep drop-offs and challenging terrain. Families with children ages 8-11 can enjoy the hike to Scout Lookout (the turnaround point before chains begin), which offers incredible views with less intensity. Not recommended for younger children due to narrow paths and significant elevation gain.

About

Angels Landing is one of Zion National Park's most thrilling and iconic hikes, featuring dramatic cliff-edge trails and chain-assisted scrambles that older kids and teens will find absolutely exhilarating. While the final half-mile requires a permit and is not suitable for young children, families can hike the spectacular 2-mile trail to Scout Lookout together, enjoying breathtaking canyon views without the extreme exposure.

Highlights

  • The famous chain-assisted scramble along narrow cliff edges (for permitted older kids and teens)
  • Walter's Wiggles,21 steep switchbacks that kids love to count as they climb
  • Scout Lookout viewpoint offering stunning panoramic views without requiring chains or permits
  • Refrigerator Canyon, a cool, shaded section that provides relief from the sun
  • Spectacular views of Zion Canyon's red rock walls and the Virgin River below

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Secure a permit in advance through the lottery system or day-before lottery, as they're required for the final chain section and sell out quickly during peak season
  2. 2.Start your hike before 7 AM to avoid afternoon heat and crowds, and bring at least twice as much water as you think you'll need
  3. 3.Take the free Zion shuttle from the visitor center, private vehicles aren't allowed on the scenic drive during peak season
  4. 4.Wear sturdy hiking shoes with excellent traction; the trail includes steep switchbacks called Walter's Wiggles that can be slippery
  5. 5.Even if you don't attempt the chain section, the hike to Scout Lookout is incredibly rewarding and a great goal for families with younger hikers

Best Time to Visit

Visit in spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) for moderate temperatures and stunning scenery. Start early morning (6-7 AM) to beat heat and crowds, avoid summer midday heat which can be dangerous. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.

What to Know

A timed permit is required year-round for the final half-mile chain section (apply via lottery on recreation.gov). The Zion park entrance fee is $35 per vehicle (valid 7 days), and free shuttle buses run from the visitor center to trailheads during peak season (March-November).

Seasonal Notes

Open year-round but winter (December-February) can involve snow and ice requiring microspikes or crampons. Spring and fall offer ideal temperatures. Summer (June-August) brings extreme heat, start very early and consider skipping on days over 95°F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common July-September.
