Northwest River Natural Area Preserve

Northwest River Natural Area Preserve offers families over 1,000 acres of pristine wilderness to explore through easy-to-moderate trails that wind along the scenic Northwest River. Kids can spot turtles sunning on logs, blue herons wading in shallow waters, and learn about the unique Atlantic white cedar swamp ecosystem through interpretive signs along the trails,making it an outdoor classroom where nature comes alive.

Early fall (September-October) offers the most comfortable weather with fewer bugs, beautiful foliage, and active wildlife preparing for winter. Weekday mornings provide the quietest experience for nature observation, while spring migration (April-May) brings excellent bird-watching opportunities.

Admission is free with ample parking at the main trailhead off VA-168. There are no facilities (restrooms, water fountains, or food vendors), so come prepared with water, snacks, and plan bathroom stops beforehand.

Open year-round, but spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions. Summer can be hot and humid with active mosquitoes. Winter provides clearer views through bare trees and peaceful trails, though some paths may be muddy. Trails may temporarily close after heavy storms.
