False Cape State Park

1. 1.Rent bikes at the False Cape Landing contact station to make the 4-mile trek more manageable,kids will have much more energy left for beach time and exploration.
2. 2.Book one of the primitive cabins or campsites well in advance for an unforgettable overnight adventure; you'll have the beach almost entirely to yourselves at sunrise.
3. 3.Bring a wagon or bike trailer to haul water, snacks, and beach gear since there are no facilities or stores once you enter the park.
4. 4.Download the park map before you go as cell service is non-existent,this adds to the adventure but requires advance planning.
5. 5.Visit the interpretive center at Back Bay Wildlife Refuge first to get your bearings and let kids earn a Junior Ranger badge before heading into False Cape.

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most comfortable temperatures for the bike ride in and beach exploration. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends. Arrive early morning to complete the journey before midday heat and maximize time at the beach.

Entry requires a Virginia State Parks parking pass ($5-10 daily) purchased at Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. Bring all food, water, and supplies as there are absolutely no amenities, concessions, or facilities beyond primitive restrooms. The park is not stroller or wheelchair accessible due to the multi-mile trail access required.

Summer (June-August) brings heat, humidity, and biting insects,bring plenty of bug spray. Winter access can be challenging due to weather conditions. Sea turtle nesting season (May-August) offers special wildlife viewing opportunities. Some trails may close during extreme weather or nesting periods, so check park alerts before visiting.

Pack a substantial picnic lunch and plenty of snacks as no food is available at the park. After your adventure, head to Pungo Pizza & Ice Cream (about 20 minutes away) for hearty pizzas and celebratory ice cream, or try Taste Unlimited for sandwiches and casual family dining.
