Maymont is a 100-acre Victorian estate that's an absolute treasure for Richmond families, offering something for everyone from toddlers to tweens. Kids can visit farm animals, explore nature exhibits featuring river otters and bears, wander through beautiful gardens, and burn energy on hiking trails and playgrounds, all in one spectacular (and mostly free!) location.
Spring (April-May) offers perfect weather, blooming gardens, and baby animals at the farm. Weekday mornings are less crowded than weekends. Autumn is equally beautiful with fall foliage, while summer can be hot but the shaded trails and gardens provide relief.
Grounds admission is FREE (donations suggested), but there are small fees for the mansion tour ($10 adults, $7 kids) and tram rides. Parking is free. Limited food is available at a small café, so bringing snacks or a picnic is recommended. The terrain includes hills and uneven paths, so plan accordingly.
Open year-round with gardens most spectacular in spring and fall. The grounds remain beautiful in winter but some areas may be less accessible. Special events include the popular Garden Glow holiday lights display (November-January), spring plant sales, and summer concerts.
