Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge offers families an incredible opportunity to explore over 9,000 acres of pristine coastal habitat along Virginia Beach's southern shoreline. Kids can spot dolphins, sea turtles, and hundreds of bird species while hiking easy trails through maritime forests, dunes, and freshwater marshes. The visitor center features interactive exhibits and touch tanks that bring local ecosystems to life for young naturalists.

Visit during spring (April-May) or fall (September-November) for mild weather and peak bird migration when kids can spot the most diverse wildlife. Weekday mornings are least crowded, offering peaceful nature experiences and better chances of seeing shy animals.

Entry costs $10 per vehicle (valid for 7 days) and the refuge is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Restrooms are available at the visitor center, but trails have no facilities. The main trails are stroller-accessible with some sandy sections.

Peak bird migration occurs in spring and fall, making these ideal seasons for wildlife enthusiasts. Summer can be hot and buggy, so bring insect repellent and sun protection. Winter offers quieter visits with excellent waterfowl viewing. Some trails may close temporarily during extreme weather or nesting seasons.
