Regata Storica

Annual historical rowing regatta, typically first Sunday in September

Season: September September

Grand Canal

About

The Regata Storica is Venice's most spectacular historical rowing regatta, featuring costumed rowers in ornate 16th-century boats parading down the Grand Canal followed by thrilling competitive races. This centuries-old tradition combines vibrant pageantry, athletic competition, and Venetian history into a colorful waterborne spectacle that captivates children and adults alike. It's a unique opportunity for families to witness authentic Venetian culture and experience the Grand Canal transformed into a festive, carnival-like atmosphere.

What to Expect

Families will experience a magnificent water parade featuring dozens of gondoliers and rowers dressed in Renaissance costumes aboard elaborately decorated historical boats, followed by exciting competitive rowing races in traditional Venetian vessels. The Grand Canal becomes a floating theater with thousands of spectators lining the banks, bridges, and waterfront palaces. Children will be mesmerized by the colorful costumes, the skill of the rowers, and the festive atmosphere with cheering crowds, while parents can appreciate the authentic historical pageantry and Venetian tradition. The event lasts several hours and features multiple race categories, from two-oared gondolini to the championship race.

Highlights for Kids

  • The spectacular opening parade with rowers in brilliant Renaissance costumes aboard ornately decorated historical boats including the Doge's ceremonial barge
  • Watching skilled athletes race traditional Venetian boats at high speeds down the Grand Canal with crowds cheering loudly
  • Seeing the Grand Canal from famous bridges and waterfront spots packed with excited spectators creating an electric atmosphere
  • The colorful flags, banners, and decorations adorning palaces and boats throughout the canal
  • The finish line drama and award ceremony where winners receive flags and prizes in traditional ceremonies

Pro Tips for Families

  1. Arrive at least 90 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot along the Grand Canal—bridges like Rialto and Accademia get extremely crowded, so consider less popular spots like Riva del Vin or near Ca' Foscari for better views with kids
  2. Book a restaurant with canal-side seating months in advance for a comfortable viewing experience with bathroom access and shade, or consider renting a boat viewing spot for a truly Venetian experience
  3. Bring sun protection, water, and snacks as shade is limited and vendors are scarce along viewing areas—facilities are few once you claim your spot
  4. Download the race route map beforehand and explain the different boat types (gondolini, caorline, pupparini) to kids to help them follow the action and stay engaged throughout the event

Best Time to Visit

Arrive by 2:30-3:00 PM to secure viewing spots before the historical parade begins around 4:00 PM, which is the most visually spectacular part for children. The competitive races follow and continue until approximately 6:00-7:00 PM. The earlier historical parade is most engaging for younger children with its colorful costumes and decorated boats, while older kids may enjoy staying for the championship race finals around 5:30-6:00 PM when the competition is most intense.

Food & Drinks

Food vendors are limited along the canal route, so plan ahead by bringing snacks and water for kids or dining before/after at nearby restaurants. Many families purchase cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and panini from bacari (wine bars) near viewing spots to enjoy during the event. Gelato stands throughout Venice are perfect for treating kids afterward. For a special experience, book a canal-side restaurant table where you can enjoy a meal while watching—restaurants near Rialto and along the Grand Canal offer viewing opportunities but require advance reservations.

Parking & Access

Venice has no car access—visitors must park at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto parking garages (€30-40/day) and walk or take vaporetto water buses. From Marco Polo Airport, take the Alilaguna water bus or ACTV bus to Venice. Strollers are challenging in Venice's crowded bridges and streets, especially during the regatta when crowds are dense—baby carriers are strongly recommended. Plan your vaporetto route in advance as water buses will be extremely crowded and some routes may be altered for the event. Walking from Piazzale Roma to prime viewing spots takes 15-25 minutes through narrow, pedestrian-only streets.
