Late spring through early September (May to September) offers the warmest weather for swimming and water activities. Weekday mornings are quietest, while weekends get crowded with local families. Arrive early on summer weekends to claim prime beach spots.

Admission is completely free, and the island is easily accessible via Vienna's excellent U-Bahn system. Bring your own food and beach gear, as facilities are basic. Changing rooms and toilets are available but can be limited during peak times.

Best visited May through September when swimming and water sports are enjoyable. The island is accessible year-round for cycling and walking, but beach facilities and many kiosks close from October to April. The famous Donauinselfest music festival takes place in June, which is exciting but extremely crowded for families with small children.

Head to Copa Cagrana beach bar area on the Old Danube side for casual family-friendly dining with pizza, ice cream, and Austrian snacks. Alternatively, bring a picnic from Naschmarkt or a local supermarket before heading to the island.
