Colville National Forest

4.7(1,354 reviews)FreeAdventure
🕑 Half-day to multi-day camping trips👶 Best for ages 5 and up. Elementary-aged kids have the stamina for moderate hiking trails and nature exploration, while teens will appreciate the more challenging backcountry options. Families with toddlers can enjoy scenic drives and easy nature walks near campgrounds, though the rugged terrain may be challenging for strollers.

About

Colville National Forest is a sprawling wilderness playground spanning over a million acres in northeastern Washington, offering families endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. With easy hiking trails, developed campgrounds, scenic drives perfect for wildlife spotting, and kid-friendly fishing spots, this vast forest provides the ideal setting for introducing children to the wonders of nature without the crowds found at more famous national parks.

Highlights

  • Easy nature trails like the Noisy Creek Trail perfect for young hikers
  • Sullivan Lake with swimming beaches and calm water for kids
  • Wildlife spotting including deer, moose, black bears, and countless bird species
  • Junior Ranger programs available through the visitor center
  • Primitive camping experiences that teach kids outdoor skills

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Stop at the Colville Ranger District office (open weekdays) before exploring to get updated trail maps, junior ranger activity booklets, and current road conditions.
  2. 2.Download offline maps before you go, as cell service is extremely limited or nonexistent throughout most of the forest.
  3. 3.Bring layers for kids even in summer. Temperatures can drop significantly in the higher elevations and mornings are often chilly.
  4. 4.Sullivan Lake and Beaver Lodge Resort areas offer the easiest family-friendly access with restrooms, picnic areas, and calm water for wading.
  5. 5.Pack out all trash and bring extra bags. There are limited facilities once you leave developed campgrounds, and teaching kids to leave no trace is part of the adventure.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early fall (May to September) offers the best conditions with accessible trails and mild weather. Visit on weekdays to avoid weekend camping crowds. Morning hours are ideal for wildlife viewing when animals are most active, and temperatures are cooler for hiking with kids.

What to Know

Entry to the forest is free, though some developed campgrounds charge fees ($10 to $20 per night). Most forest roads are unpaved and can be rough, so check road conditions before venturing far. There are no restaurants or stores within the forest, so pack all food, water, and supplies before arriving.

Seasonal Notes

Many higher elevation roads and trails remain snow-covered until late May or June. Fall foliage peaks in late September. The ranger district office is closed on weekends year-round. Winter access is extremely limited and requires snow travel experience. Summer brings wildflowers and the best weather for family camping.

Nearby Eats

Head to Kettle Falls (about 15 miles from forest access points) for family-friendly options like Yummy Teriyaki for quick Asian fare or China Bend Winery which welcomes families with outdoor seating and simple lunch menus. Stock up on groceries and picnic supplies at Harvest Foods in Colville before heading into the forest.
