1. 1.Bring a kite! Local vendors sell inexpensive kites near the green, or buy one beforehand. The constant ocean breeze makes this one of the best kite-flying spots in Asia.
2. 2.Visit on weekends to see the park at its liveliest with local families, food vendors, and street performers, but weekday evenings offer a more relaxed atmosphere with fewer crowds.
3. 3.Try kid-friendly street food like isso wade (prawn fritters), fresh corn on the cob, and coconut water, but bring hand sanitizer and choose busy vendors with fresh food.
4. 4.The park has limited shade, so bring hats, sunscreen, and bottled water. Position yourselves near the ocean side for the best breeze.

Late afternoon from 4pm onwards is ideal, especially for sunset viewing around 6pm. The sea breeze picks up, temperatures cool down, and the park comes alive with families, kite flyers, and food vendors. Avoid midday heat (11am-3pm) when the sun is strongest and shade is minimal.

Entry is completely free and the park is open 24 hours, though it is most active and safest during daylight and early evening. Basic public restrooms are available but may not meet Western standards, so plan accordingly. Food vendors accept Sri Lankan rupees only, so have local currency on hand.

Best visited during the dry season (January to March) when weather is most predictable. The southwest monsoon (May to September) can bring afternoon rains and stronger winds. Kite flying is excellent year-round but especially popular during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April when the park hosts special celebrations.

The Park Street Mews food court near the southern end offers sit-down dining with Western and Asian options in a more controlled environment. For upscale dining with kids, the Sea Spray restaurant at the iconic Galle Face Hotel offers ocean views and child-friendly menus, though it is pricier than street food options.
