Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo offers an unforgettable hands-on experience where kids can feed giraffes at eye level, a highlight that sets this mountainside zoo apart. With over 400 animals including lions, elephants, and grizzly bears spread across scenic elevated pathways, families enjoy both incredible wildlife encounters and breathtaking views of Colorado Springs from 6,800 feet elevation.

1. 1.Arrive right at opening (9 AM) to feed the giraffes before crowds arrive and while animals are most active and hungry
2. 2.Wear comfortable walking shoes as the zoo is built on a mountainside with steep inclines and over 600 stairs throughout
3. 3.Bring a light jacket even in summer,the elevation means temperatures can be 10-15 degrees cooler than downtown Colorado Springs
4. 4.Purchase giraffe feeding tokens ($3-5) early as they often sell out by midday, especially on weekends
5. 5.Visit the African Rift Valley exhibit first, then work your way downhill to save energy for the kids

Visit on weekday mornings in spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) for smaller crowds, active animals, and comfortable temperatures. Weekends get very busy, especially during summer when the zoo can reach capacity by late morning.

Admission prices vary by season (typically $25-35 for adults, $20-30 for kids 3-11). Parking is free but limited, so arrive early or expect a shuttle ride from overflow lots. Multiple food options available on-site, and strollers are available to rent though the hilly terrain makes baby carriers more practical.

Open year-round with extended summer hours (until 6 PM June-August). Electric Safari during holidays (November-January) features spectacular light displays. Some outdoor exhibits may close during extreme winter weather. Spring and fall offer ideal weather, while summer can be hot during midday.

The Famous Steak House (15 minutes away) offers a casual family atmosphere with a kids menu, or head to Ivywild School (20 minutes), a converted elementary school housing Bristol Brewing Company with a dedicated family-friendly restaurant and playground.
