Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings (9:00-11:00 AM) for smaller crowds and the best chance to interact with rangers. Winter months (December-March) offer the most spectacular elk viewing opportunities on the refuge, while summer provides the most comfortable weather for exploring.

What to Know

Admission to the visitor center is free, making this an excellent budget-friendly activity. The facility is fully accessible and has restrooms, but doesn't have a café,plan to eat at one of Jackson's many nearby restaurants.

Seasonal Notes

The center is open year-round, but the famous winter sleigh rides through the elk refuge (operated separately) run from mid-December through early April when thousands of elk migrate to the area. Summer offers wildflower viewing and pleasant weather, while fall features elk rutting season.
