1. 1.Start early morning (7-9am) to avoid afternoon winds and heat, and you'll have the best chance of spotting dolphins and whales (June to November).
2. 2.Wear proper hiking shoes with good grip as sections can be rocky and uneven. The trail can get slippery after rain or ocean spray.
3. 3.Pack plenty of water and sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) as there's little shade along the coastal path. South African sun is intense year-round.
4. 4.Download an offline map before you go as cell reception can be patchy along the trail. Let someone know your hiking plans.
5. 5.Visit Kalk Bay Harbour before or after your hike to see the fishing boats and seals, and grab fish and chips from the local vendors.

Visit on weekday mornings (Tuesday to Thursday, 8-10am) for fewer crowds and calmer conditions. Winter months (June to August) offer the best whale watching opportunities, while spring (September to November) brings wildflowers and pleasant temperatures around 18-22°C (64-72°F).

The trail is free to access and open 24/7, though daylight hiking is essential for safety. Street parking is available in Kalk Bay village, but arrive early on weekends as spaces fill quickly. No facilities are available on the trail itself, so use restrooms at nearby cafes before starting.

While open year-round, winter (June to August) is peak whale watching season. Summer (December to February) can be very hot with strong southeaster winds in the afternoons. Spring (September to November) offers the most comfortable hiking conditions. Check weather forecasts before visiting as strong winds and rough seas can make the trail dangerous.
