Strand Beach

Strand Beach is a wonderful family destination featuring a long stretch of soft white sand and calm, shallow waters ideal for young swimmers. With lifeguards on duty, excellent facilities including playgrounds and picnic areas, and the stunning backdrop of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, this Blue Flag beach offers everything families need for a perfect beach day in the Cape.

1. 1.Arrive before 10am during peak summer months (December to February) to secure parking and a good spot on the beach before crowds arrive.
2. 2.Bring reef-safe sunscreen as South African sun is intense. Reapply every 90 minutes, especially after swimming.
3. 3.The tidal pools at the eastern end near the pavilion are perfect for toddlers and fill with warm water at low tide.
4. 4.Pack a windbreaker or beach tent as the Cape's famous southeaster winds can pick up in the afternoons, especially in summer.
5. 5.Look for the beachfront playground near the main parking area, which provides a nice break from sand and surf for restless kids.

Visit during South African summer (November to March) for warm water and sunny weather. Weekday mornings are quietest, while weekends can get busy with locals. Avoid July and August when water is coldest and weather is unpredictable.

Parking is available along Beach Road with nominal fees (usually 10-20 rand per hour). Clean public restrooms and change facilities are available. Several small cafes and convenience stores are within walking distance for snacks and refreshments.

Best visited November through March when temperatures are warm (22 to 28°C). Water temperature peaks in February and March. Winter months (June to August) are cooler and windier with water temperatures around 12 to 14°C. Lifeguards typically operate daily during December and January school holidays, and weekends only in shoulder seasons.

The Blowfish Restaurant right on the beachfront offers family-friendly dining with kids' menus and ocean views. For quick bites, head to the nearby Somerset Mall (5 minutes drive) which has multiple chain restaurants and food court options suitable for families.
