Desert and Red Rock Getaways
Sedona, Arizona
Sedona’s red rock formations are among the most photogenic landscapes in the US. Cathedral Rock, Devil’s Bridge, and Bell Rock offer world-class hiking with views at every turn. The town has a strong arts community, good restaurants, and the famous vortex sites. About 2 hours north of Phoenix. Best from March through May and September through November.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Tucson, Arizona
A UNESCO City of Gastronomy with deep Mexican-American food traditions. Saguaro National Park flanks the city on both sides with giant cacti. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is one of the best natural history museums in the country. More affordable and less touristy than Phoenix or Sedona. About 2 hours south of Phoenix.

Mountain Escapes
Flagstaff, Arizona
A mountain college town at 7,000 feet surrounded by ponderosa pine forest. Flagstaff is the gateway to the Grand Canyon (80 miles north), the Snowbowl ski area, and the historic Route 66. The downtown has craft breweries, independent restaurants, and Lowell Observatory (where Pluto was discovered). Cool even in summer. About 2.5 hours north of Phoenix.

Planning Tips
Season matters more here than anywhere. Desert destinations (Sedona, Tucson, Joshua Tree, Moab) are unbearable in summer (100+ F). Visit October through April. Mountain destinations (Flagstaff, Big Bear) are great in summer and winter but have mud season in spring.
Hydration is critical. The dry desert air dehydrates you faster than you realize. Carry at least 1 gallon of water per person per day for any outdoor activity. Start hikes early in the morning.
Best road trip combos: Sedona + Grand Canyon (2 hrs), Santa Fe + Albuquerque (1 hr), Joshua Tree + Palm Springs (45 min), Moab + Arches + Canyonlands (all within 30 min).
