Children's Pool La Jolla

Children's Pool offers a unique dual experience: a small, protected beach with gentle waves perfect for little ones to wade and play, plus the incredible opportunity to observe a thriving harbor seal colony from the safety of the seawall. The breakwater creates wonderfully calm waters ideal for nervous swimmers, while the proximity to sunbathing seals makes this spot educational and entertaining for kids of all ages.

1. 1.Arrive before 10am to snag street parking on Coast Boulevard and avoid crowds,spots fill up quickly on weekends
2. 2.Bring binoculars for an even better view of the seals, and remind kids that touching or approaching the seals is prohibited (they're wild animals and protected by law)
3. 3.The beach can be quite small at high tide, so check tide schedules and visit during low to mid-tide for more sand space
4. 4.Pack water shoes as the sand can get hot and there are occasional rocks near the water's edge
5. 5.Walk down the stairs on the north side for beach access,the seals primarily hang out on the south side of the beach and along the rocks

Visit on weekday mornings between 9-11am for smaller crowds and calmer conditions. Winter and spring months (December-May) offer the best seal viewing as more seals haul out during pupping season, though the water is chillier. Summer afternoons can be extremely crowded.

Parking is free but limited to metered street parking along Coast Boulevard. There are no food vendors at the beach itself, and restroom facilities can have lines during peak times. The area is stroller-accessible down to the seawall but not to the beach itself.

December through May is pupping season when you'll see the most seals, including adorable pups. The beach is accessible year-round (24 hours), but water temperatures are warmest July-September. Be aware that seal presence varies daily,some days the beach may have just a few seals, other days dozens.

The Cottage La Jolla (about 0.5 miles away) offers excellent breakfast and lunch with a kid-friendly menu in a charming setting. For quicker options, Duke's La Jolla has casual oceanfront dining with fish tacos and kid favorites just a short walk up Coast Boulevard.
