Barn Island Wildlife Management Area

Barn Island Wildlife Management Area offers families an authentic coastal nature experience with over 1,000 acres of pristine salt marshes, walking trails, and exceptional wildlife viewing. Early morning hours during spring and fall migration seasons (April-May and September-October) offer the most spectacular birding opportunities. Visit on weekday mornings to avoid weekend crowds and catch wildlife at their most active.

This is a free, unstaffed wildlife preserve with no visitor center or facilities, so come prepared with water, snacks, and bathroom breaks planned beforehand. Trails are generally flat and easy but not paved, making strollers challenging on most paths.

Spring and fall migrations (April-May and September-October) bring the greatest bird diversity. Summer visits can be hot and buggy but offer opportunities to see nesting birds. Winter provides peaceful trails with fewer crowds, though dress warmly for exposed coastal conditions.
