Crab Island is Destin's famous shallow sandbar that transforms into an incredible family water playground accessible only by boat. Visit April through October when water temperatures are warmest, with May and September offering the best balance of good weather and smaller crowds. Aim for weekday mornings between 10 AM-1 PM before afternoon thunderstorms typically roll in during summer months. Avoid holiday weekends when the sandbar becomes extremely crowded.

Boat access is required,no beach entrance exists. You can rent pontoon boats, kayaks, or book water taxi services from Destin Harbor (budget $200-400 for boat rentals). Floating vendors accept cash for food and drinks, but bring your own supplies to save money. There are no restroom facilities, so plan accordingly.

Crab Island is technically open year-round, but the season realistically runs April-October when water temperatures are comfortable. Peak season is June-August with larger crowds but warmest water. Water can be too chilly for young children November-March. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so morning visits are safest.
