Big Cypress National Preserve

Big Cypress National Preserve offers families an authentic Florida wilderness experience with easy-access boardwalk trails perfect for spotting alligators, turtles, and wading birds in their natural habitat. December through March offers the best conditions with cooler temperatures, fewer mosquitoes, and more concentrated wildlife around water sources. Weekday mornings are less crowded than weekends, and early morning visits provide the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

Admission is free. Facilities are limited with restrooms only at visitor centers, so plan accordingly. Bring all food and drinks as there are no concessions within the preserve.

Dry season (November-April) is ideal for wildlife viewing and comfortable weather. Summer months (May-October) bring intense heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito activity. Some trails may have standing water during wet season. The preserve is open 24/7 year-round, though visitor centers have limited hours.

Joanie's Blue Crab Cafe in Ochopee (about 10 minutes away) serves family-friendly seafood and sandwiches in a casual setting. For more dining options, plan to eat in Naples (about 45 minutes west) before or after your visit.
