Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park offers families a quintessential Florida beach experience with calm, shallow waters perfect for young swimmers and some of the best shelling on Florida's Gulf Coast. Unlike crowded commercial beaches, this pristine state park features protected natural areas, boardwalk trails through mangroves, and shaded picnic pavilions that make it easy to spend an entire day with kids of all ages.

1. 1.Arrive early (by 9am) on weekends and holidays as the park reaches capacity and closes the gates when full, especially during peak season
2. 2.Bring a mesh bag or bucket for shell collecting,the north end of the beach near the pass has the best selection, especially at low tide
3. 3.Pack a wagon or beach cart as it's about a 5-minute walk from the parking areas to the beach across wooden boardwalks
4. 4.Stop at the ranger station for a Junior Ranger activity book to keep kids engaged while learning about sea turtles and coastal ecosystems
5. 5.Visit the observation tower near the park entrance for panoramic views and excellent bird-watching opportunities that give active kids a fun side activity

Visit on weekday mornings between October and April for the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best shelling after overnight tides. Summer afternoons bring heat and afternoon thunderstorms, so morning visits (8am-noon) work best during peak season.

Park entrance is $6 per vehicle (up to 8 people). Restrooms, outdoor showers, and covered pavilions are available, but there's no food concession, so pack snacks, lunch, and plenty of water. Wagon-friendly boardwalks make beach access easy for families with gear.

Sea turtle nesting season runs May through October,kids love spotting marked nests and learning about conservation efforts. Winter months (December-March) offer the most comfortable temperatures and excellent shelling after cold fronts. Hurricane season (June-November) may occasionally cause closures.

Head to Skillets (3 miles south) for family-friendly breakfast and lunch with a great kids menu, or try USS Nemo Restaurant (4 miles) for casual waterfront dining with fresh seafood and kid favorites like burgers and mac-and-cheese.
