1. 1.Arrive early (before 10am) on weekends to secure parking at North Beach, the most family-friendly area with calmer waters and the best playground
2. 2.Bring a wagon or cart to transport beach gear - it's a bit of a walk from parking to the beach, but paved paths make wheeled transport easy
3. 3.Rent bikes or bring your own to explore the 7-mile paved trail system connecting different areas of the park; tandem bikes and kid trailers are available
4. 4.Don't miss the historic Fort De Soto itself - kids love climbing on the cannons and exploring the fortifications, and it provides welcome shade on hot days
5. 5.Pack plenty of water and snacks as food options are limited to one small café; there are covered pavilions perfect for picnic lunches

Visit on weekday mornings (8-11am) from October through April for the best weather, smallest crowds, and easiest parking. Summer weekends get extremely crowded, and afternoon thunderstorms are common June-September.

Parking is $5 per vehicle (honor system, cash only). The park has excellent facilities including clean restrooms, outdoor showers, and beach wheelchairs available for checkout. A small café operates at North Beach, but bringing your own food is recommended for families.

Open year-round. Best weather is October-May with mild temperatures and low humidity. Summer (June-September) brings afternoon thunderstorms, high heat, and larger crowds. Sea turtle nesting season (May-October) means some beach areas may have restricted access after dark. Winter months (December-February) offer the most comfortable beach days with fewer bugs.

Head to nearby Tierra Verde for kid-friendly options like Lucky Lobster (casual seafood with outdoor seating) or drive 15 minutes to Pass-a-Grille Beach for Island Flavors & Tings (Caribbean food with great fish tacos) and multiple ice cream shops.
