The legendary Hana Highway is a thrilling full-day adventure that takes families along 64 miles of winding coastal road past jungle waterfalls, hidden swimming holes, and black sand beaches. Kids will be mesmerized by the 600+ curves, one-lane bridges, and countless stops for banana bread, fresh fruit stands, and incredible photo opportunities at panoramic ocean viewpoints.
Weekday mornings (especially Tuesday-Thursday) starting before 7am offer the lightest traffic and best parking at popular stops. Avoid weekends and cruise ship days when the road becomes congested. The drive is beautiful year-round, though winter months may have fuller waterfalls but also more rain.
The drive is free, but come prepared with a full tank of gas, cash for food stands, and patience for the winding road. There are limited restrooms along the route (mainly at Keanae Peninsula and Hana town). Rental car insurance policies may have restrictions on this road, so check beforehand.
The road is open year-round, but waterfalls are most impressive during winter/spring rainy season (November-March). Summer offers calmer ocean conditions for beach stops. Flash flooding can occasionally close sections after heavy storms, so check road conditions before departing.
Stock up on provisions before leaving, try Paia Fish Market in Paia town for fish tacos to go, or grab breakfast at Paia Bay Coffee. Along the route, stop at Halfway to Hana for famous banana bread and Coconut Glen's ice cream stand near Hana town for dairy-free coconut ice cream that kids love.
