🕑 3-5 hours👶 Best for ages 2-12. Toddlers and preschoolers love the gentle shore break for safe splashing, while elementary-aged kids enjoy bodyboarding the small waves and exploring the expansive beach. The easy ocean entry makes it perfect for families with children who are still building water confidence.

About

Mākena State Park, often called 'Big Beach,' offers families over two-thirds of a mile of golden sand and calm, gentle waves perfect for little ones learning to splash and play. The wide-open beach gives kids plenty of room to build sandcastles, try bodyboarding, and explore tide pools, while parents can relax knowing the gradual slope into the water is ideal for young swimmers.

Highlights

  • Two-thirds of a mile of soft, golden sand perfect for sandcastle building
  • Gentle waves ideal for young children and beginner bodyboarders
  • Stunning sunset views that captivate kids and adults alike
  • Tide pools at the north end for exploring marine life
  • Wide, spacious beach with plenty of room for beach games and activities

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive before 9:00 AM to snag parking in the main lot and claim a shady spot under the kiawe trees,it fills up quickly by mid-morning.
  2. 2.Bring a pop-up beach tent or umbrella as natural shade is limited, and the sun is intense even on cloudy days.
  3. 3.Pack reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, and all your snacks since there are no food vendors or facilities beyond portable restrooms.
  4. 4.Check the waves before letting kids in,while usually gentle, Big Beach can occasionally have strong shore break when surf is up.
  5. 5.Walk to the left (north) end of the beach for the calmest waters and best tide pooling opportunities with kids.

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings between 7:00-10:00 AM for the calmest waters, smallest crowds, and cooler temperatures. Late afternoon visits (after 4:00 PM) offer spectacular sunset views, though the park closes at 7:45 PM so plan accordingly.

What to Know

Parking is free but limited, and the park has only basic portable restroom facilities with no running water, showers, or food vendors. Bring everything you need for the day, and note that the walk from the parking lot to the beach is short and stroller-friendly.

Seasonal Notes

Winter months (November-March) can bring larger surf that may be too strong for young children, so check conditions before visiting. Summer offers the calmest waters. The beach is open year-round with consistent hours, though occasional high surf advisories may make swimming unsafe.

Nearby Eats

Head to Makena Grill (5 minutes away) for casual plate lunches and poke bowls, or drive 15 minutes north to Wailea where you'll find The Shops at Wailea with multiple family-friendly options including Pita Paradise and Longhi's with kids' menus.
