Lakeside Nature Center offers families a unique opportunity to get up close with Missouri's native wildlife, including raptors, reptiles, and mammals that are being rehabilitated or serve as educational ambassadors. Kids are captivated by the indoor exhibits featuring owls, hawks, snakes, and turtles, while the surrounding trails and nature preserve provide plenty of space to explore and burn energy.
Weekday mornings (Tuesday-Thursday) are quietest and best for focused learning. Weekend mornings are busier but often have more staff available to answer questions. Visit during spring or fall for comfortable weather if you want to explore the outdoor trails afterward.
Admission is completely FREE, though donations support the rehabilitation efforts. The center is located within Swope Park with ample free parking right outside. There's no food service on-site, so plan accordingly, and the facility is wheelchair accessible.
Closed Mondays year-round. Spring (March-May) is particularly exciting as the center cares for many baby animals. Winter visits are cozy but note that some outdoor trails may be muddy or icy. The center occasionally closes for special events, so check their website before visiting.
Swope Park has picnic areas perfect for packing a lunch. For sit-down options, head to nearby Longview Lake where you'll find Lakeside Grill (about 10 minutes away) with burgers and kid-friendly fare, or venture to the nearby neighborhoods along Gregory Boulevard for local barbecue options.
