Centennial Park

FreePark
🕑 3 to 5 hours for a full family outing👶 Best for all ages, from babies to teens. Toddlers enjoy the enclosed playgrounds and duck feeding, primary-age kids love cycling and exploring, while teens appreciate the open spaces for sports and outdoor activities.

About

Centennial Park is Sydney's premier family outdoor destination, offering 189 hectares of open green space perfect for active kids and nature-loving families. With multiple well-equipped playgrounds, scenic duck ponds for feeding, extensive cycling and walking paths, and sprawling lawns ideal for picnics and ball games, this free parkland provides hours of entertainment in the heart of the city.

Highlights

  • Multiple themed playgrounds with modern equipment suitable for different age groups
  • Duck ponds where children can feed friendly waterfowl and spot other wildlife
  • Over 3.5km of cycling paths perfect for teaching kids to ride bikes safely
  • Huge open fields ideal for kite flying, ball games, and running around freely
  • Horse riding trails where you might spot riders and horses, exciting for animal-loving kids

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Bring bread or bird seed to feed the ducks at the ponds, but arrive early as the birds are most active in the morning and less interested after being fed all day.
  2. 2.Rent bikes or scooters from the kiosk near the main entrance on Grand Drive if you didn't bring your own, perfect for exploring the extensive path network.
  3. 3.Pack a full picnic as food options within the park are limited. The shaded areas near Lachlan Swamp and Willow Pond are ideal spots.
  4. 4.Download a park map before visiting as the park is huge and easy to get turned around. The Parklands Sports Centre has clean public toilets and is a good central meeting point.
  5. 5.Visit the model boat pond on weekends to watch enthusiasts sail their miniature vessels, a free and surprisingly captivating show for kids.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings or late afternoons are least crowded, especially Tuesday through Thursday. Sydney's autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor play, avoiding the intense summer heat and winter chill.

What to Know

Entry is completely free with multiple access points around the perimeter. Parking is available on surrounding streets (metered in some areas) and in small car parks along Grand Drive. There are cafes at the park entrances, clean public toilets throughout, and the flat paths are stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Seasonal Notes

The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Summer (December to February) can be very hot, so bring sun protection, hats, and plenty of water. Winter mornings can be chilly but sunny afternoons are pleasant. The park hosts various family events and festivals throughout the year, particularly during school holidays.

Nearby Eats

The Centennial Park Café near the main entrance offers family-friendly meals and great coffee for parents. Alternatively, head to nearby Paddington or Woollahra (5 minute drive) for numerous cafes and restaurants with kids' menus, including Bill's Woollahra for casual Australian breakfast and lunch.
