Coogee

Activity
🕑 3-5 hours👶 Best for ages 2-12. Toddlers and preschoolers love the shallow paddling areas and rock pool exploring, while school-age kids enjoy swimming in the ocean pools, bodyboarding in the gentle waves, and hunting for sea creatures in the tide pools.

About

Coogee Beach is an absolute gem for families, featuring calm, shallow waters perfect for young swimmers, natural rock pools teeming with crabs and small fish, and excellent ocean pools including the iconic McIver's Ladies Baths and Wylie's Baths. The beachfront promenade offers multiple playgrounds, grassy picnic areas with BBQ facilities, and a relaxed vibe that makes it less hectic than nearby Bondi while still offering all the coastal fun.

Highlights

  • Natural rock pools filled with sea stars, crabs, and small fish for hands-on marine discovery
  • Wylie's Baths ocean pool with incredible views and safe swimming for all ages
  • Multiple playgrounds including one with a nautical theme right on the beachfront
  • Calm, patrolled swimming areas perfect for beginner swimmers and nervous parents
  • The scenic Coogee to Bondi coastal walk, easily manageable with kids (or do just a section)

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Arrive early (before 9am) to snag free street parking on nearby residential streets, as the paid lots fill quickly on weekends and during Australian school holidays.
  2. 2.Bring water shoes or old sneakers for exploring the rock pools at the southern end of the beach, as the rocks can be slippery and sharp.
  3. 3.Visit Wylie's Baths at low tide for the best swimming conditions. Check tide times online before you go for optimal rock pool exploring too.
  4. 4.The children's playground near Wedding Cake Island Lookout has shade sails and is less crowded than the main playground closer to the beach.
  5. 5.Download the Beachsafe app to check surf conditions, UV levels, and lifeguard patrol times before heading out.

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings (9am-11am) during Australian autumn (March-May) or spring (September-November) for pleasant weather, smaller crowds, and calm water conditions. Summer weekends get extremely busy with locals. Lifeguards patrol daily in summer and on weekends year-round.

What to Know

Beach access is free. Parking costs around $8-10 AUD for 3 hours in paid lots, or find free street parking if you arrive early. Plenty of cafes and takeaway shops line Coogee Bay Road. Public toilets, showers, and change rooms are available near the beach. The coastal walk to Bondi is stroller-friendly.

Seasonal Notes

Swimming is best from November to March during Australian summer, though the water is swimmable year-round for hardy visitors. Lifeguards patrol daily during summer months (September-April) and weekends only in winter. UV levels are extremely high in summer, so sun protection is essential. Christmas and January school holidays are peak times with large crowds.

Nearby Eats

Coogee Pavilion is a family-friendly multi-level venue with a rooftop, casual dining, and kids' menu options. For fish and chips, try Salty Rooster just across from the beach with outdoor seating and generous portions kids love.
