4.6(1,766 reviews)$$Museum
🕑 2.5-3.5 hours👶 Best for ages 5-14. Younger elementary kids love the interactive exhibits and climbing aboard the ships, while tweens and teens are fascinated by the authentic submarine experience and naval history. Children under 5 may find the ships' steep ladders challenging.

About

Independence Seaport Museum brings Philadelphia's maritime history to life with hands-on exhibits and the incredible opportunity to board and explore two National Historic Landmark ships, the USS Olympia and USS Becuna submarine. Kids can steer a replica ship's wheel, learn about underwater archaeology, and experience what life was like aboard a real warship and submarine docked right on the Delaware River waterfront.

Highlights

  • Boarding and exploring the USS Becuna submarine with its authentic tight quarters and periscopes
  • Walking the decks of the 1892 cruiser USS Olympia, the oldest steel warship afloat
  • Interactive 'What Floats Your Boat?' exhibit where kids experiment with buoyancy and boat design
  • Workshop on the Water with live boat building and restoration demonstrations
  • River-themed play area for younger children with maritime activities

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Explore the ships first when kids have the most energy, the submarine has steep ladders and tight spaces that require careful supervision.
  2. 2.Visit on weekday mornings for smaller crowds and more space to explore the vessels at your own pace.
  3. 3.Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes as the ship decks can be slippery and submarine passageways are tight.
  4. 4.Don't miss the Workshop on the Water where kids can see actual boat restoration happening and sometimes try hands-on activities.
  5. 5.Combine your visit with a walk along Penn's Landing waterfront, there's a great green space perfect for burning off energy after museum time.

Best Time to Visit

Visit on weekday mornings (10:00-11:30 AM) during the school year for the quietest experience. Spring and fall offer comfortable weather for exploring the outdoor ships without summer heat or winter cold on the waterfront.

What to Know

General admission includes access to all museum galleries and both historic ships. Limited food options inside, but Penn's Landing has several family-friendly restaurants nearby. Parking is available at nearby lots along Columbus Boulevard.

Seasonal Notes

The museum is open year-round, but exploring the outdoor ships is most comfortable in spring and fall. Summer can be hot on the metal decks, and winter may have occasional ship closures during extreme weather. Check for special summer camps and pirate-themed events during school breaks.

Nearby Eats

Spruce Street Harbor Park (seasonal, summer only) has casual waterfront dining with hammocks and games perfect for families. Pizzeria Stella at Society Hill offers excellent wood-fired pizza in a family-friendly atmosphere just a short walk away.
