Waco Mammoth National Monument

Step back in time at Waco Mammoth National Monument, where your kids can see real Ice Age fossils exactly where they were discovered! This unique national park site features the nation's only recorded Columbian mammoth nursery herd, with actual mammoth bones and fossils displayed in a climate-controlled dig shelter. It's an incredible hands-on history lesson that brings prehistoric times to life for curious young minds.

1. 1.Arrive early in the day (right at 9 AM opening) to beat tour groups and have a more intimate experience viewing the fossils
2. 2.Watch the introductory film first in the visitor center - it helps kids understand what they're about to see and makes the fossil viewing much more meaningful
3. 3.Wear comfortable walking shoes as there's a quarter-mile trail from the visitor center to the dig shelter, and bring water bottles especially in warm weather
4. 4.Download the NPS Junior Ranger program beforehand so kids can complete activities during the visit and earn a badge
5. 5.Take advantage of the free ranger-led talks and demonstrations which make the experience much more engaging for children than self-guided viewing

Visit on weekday mornings during spring (March-May) or fall (October-November) for comfortable temperatures and smaller crowds. Summer mornings are also good but arrive right at opening to avoid afternoon heat, as there's outdoor walking involved.

Admission is free (it's a National Park Service site). The dig shelter is climate-controlled, but the quarter-mile trail to reach it is outdoors. There's no food available on-site, so plan accordingly. The site is mostly accessible, though the trail has some natural surface areas.

Open year-round with consistent hours seven days a week. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for the outdoor walking portions. Summer can be very hot in Texas, so morning visits are strongly recommended June-August. The indoor dig shelter provides climate control regardless of season.

Head to Torchy's Tacos (about 10 minutes away) for crowd-pleasing queso and tacos that appeal to kids and adults alike, or visit Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q for classic Texas barbecue in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere.
