Grandstaff Canyon National Recreation Trail

4.8(433 reviews)FreeAdventure
🕑 3-4 hours including water play time👶 Best for ages 5-14. Kids need to be steady on their feet for multiple water crossings over slippery rocks, while older elementary and middle schoolers love the adventure of getting wet and exploring the creek. The 4-mile round trip may be challenging for children under 5.

About

Grandstaff Canyon (formerly Negro Bill Canyon) offers families an unforgettable desert oasis experience where kids can splash through shallow creek crossings and discover natural swimming pools along a scenic 2-mile trail. The moderate hike rewards young adventurers with Morning Glory Bridge, one of Utah's largest natural rock spans, making it the perfect blend of water play and desert exploration that keeps children engaged throughout the journey.

Highlights

  • Multiple shallow creek crossings that turn the hike into an adventure playground
  • Natural pools perfect for wading, splashing, and cooling off
  • Morning Glory Bridge, a stunning 243-foot natural rock arch visible from the trail's end
  • Shaded canyon sections with towering red rock walls
  • Wildlife spotting opportunities including lizards, birds, and occasional deer

Pro Tips

  1. 1.Bring water shoes or sturdy sandals with straps for everyone, you'll cross the creek 8-10 times and wet feet are guaranteed
  2. 2.Pack a complete change of clothes and towels to leave in the car; kids often get completely soaked and sandy
  3. 3.Start early in the morning (7-8am) during summer to avoid afternoon heat and enjoy cooler temperatures for the exposed portions of the trail
  4. 4.Bring plenty of water (1 liter per person minimum) as the trail offers no shade for the first half mile and desert heat is intense
  5. 5.The natural pools about 0.5 miles in make a perfect turnaround spot for younger kids if the full 2-mile hike to Morning Glory Bridge feels too ambitious

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer ideal temperatures and creek flow. Visit on weekday mornings to avoid crowds, as this popular trail gets busy on weekends. Summer mornings are acceptable but expect heat; avoid midday entirely.

What to Know

The trailhead is free to access with parking available at the marked lot off Highway 128. No facilities or water are available at the trailhead, so come prepared with all supplies and plan bathroom stops in Moab beforehand.

Seasonal Notes

Best hiked April through October. Spring runoff (April-May) creates higher water levels for more exciting crossings but use caution. Summer (June-August) is very hot, early morning starts are essential. The trail may be icy or have standing water in winter months (November-March), making it less suitable for families with children.

Nearby Eats

Head back to Moab (about 10 minutes away) for kid-friendly options like Milt's Stop & Eat for burgers and shakes, or Quesadilla Mobilla for quick, casual Mexican food that kids love after a dusty trail adventure.
