Lobau Nature Reserve

Lobau Nature Reserve is a spectacular protected wetland area perfect for families who love outdoor exploration and wildlife spotting. With over 2,200 hectares of forests, meadows, and waterways to discover, kids can experience authentic Central European nature while learning about local ecosystems through guided walks and educational programs.

Early morning on weekdays during spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October) offers the best wildlife viewing with fewer crowds. Birds are most active at dawn, and temperatures are comfortable for hiking. Avoid midday summer visits due to heat and insects.

Entry is completely free and the reserve is open 24 hours, though most families visit during daylight. There are no facilities inside the reserve, so bring your own snacks, water, and bathroom supplies. Limited parking is available at several entry points along Lobaustrasse.

Open year-round with different seasonal highlights. Spring brings nesting birds and wildflowers, summer offers lush greenery but more insects, autumn features stunning foliage and migrating birds, and winter provides peaceful snowy landscapes (though some trails may be muddy or icy). Educational programs run primarily from April through October.

Head to nearby Gasthaus Holzinger (traditional Austrian cuisine with a kids menu and garden seating) or stop at one of the family-friendly restaurants in Donaustadt district, about 10 minutes away by car, where you will find more international options.
