The gentle waves and excellent visibility make it one of Maui's best beaches for introducing kids to snorkeling, while the sheltered bay provides peace of mind for parents watching little ones splash and play.
Visit early morning (7-10 AM) for the calmest waters, best snorkeling visibility, and easier parking. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Winter months (December-March) occasionally bring larger swells, so check surf conditions if visiting with very young children.
Parking is free but limited to about 30 spaces, so arrive early or be prepared to walk from overflow areas. There are no food vendors on-site, so pack snacks and plenty of water. Lifeguards are not always on duty, so supervise children closely.
Summer (May-September) offers the calmest conditions and warmest water. Winter months can bring occasional high surf and choppier conditions. Sea turtles are present year-round but most active during morning hours. The beach is open daily with no seasonal closures.
The Plantation House Restaurant (5-minute drive) offers kid-friendly lunch options with spectacular views, or grab pizza and casual fare at Taverna Maui at the Kapalua Golf Academy for a quick post-beach meal.
Mākena State Park, often called 'Big Beach,' offers families over two-thirds of a mile of golden sand and calm, gentle waves perfect for little ones learning to splash and play. The wide-open beach gives kids plenty of room to build sandcastles, try bodyboarding, and explore tide pools, while parents can relax knowing the gradual slope into the water is ideal for young swimmers.
Baby Beach in Lahaina is a hidden gem for families with young children, featuring a protected shallow cove where toddlers and early swimmers can safely splash and play. The calm, gentle waters are naturally shielded from waves, making it ideal for little ones getting comfortable in the ocean, plus there's a playground right nearby for when kids need a break from the water.
The Kāʻanapali Beachwalk is a scenic, stroller-friendly paved pathway that stretches along one of Maui's most beautiful beaches, connecting multiple resorts and offering easy beach access at various points. Families can enjoy a leisurely walk with stunning ocean views, stop at beach access points for sandcastle building and swimming, grab a bite at beachfront restaurants, and catch the famous nightly cliff diving ceremony at Puu Kekaa (Black Rock).
The legendary Hana Highway is a thrilling full-day adventure that takes families along 64 miles of winding coastal road past jungle waterfalls, hidden swimming holes, and black sand beaches.
